A Nice Not-Portrait
This afternoon we got a chance to spend some time with some of my best grade school, high school and college friends and their partners. We‘ll usually get together two or three times a year. This year has been a bit crazy-town-bananna-pants and we haven’t seen them as much as would be nice. It was so good to see everyone. I tried a quick portrait of a buddy of mine all the way back from third grade. Turns out knowing him for 25 years doesn’t automatically translate into creating a perfect likeness of him. It is a nice drawing, it’s just not a nice portrait. I feel like maybe that sentiment is re-stated reasonably often here? Oh well, I‘m not really looking to make myself appear perfect. I quite often struggle with portraits. But that means that when I get one right, it really feels like a win. If nothing ever felt like work, there wouldn’t be a feeling of satisfaction with a job well done. Maybe I’ll feel that satisfaction sometime later this week.
