Abstraction
Well, apparently I did indeed lie to you about finishing yesterday’s sketch today. Finishing paintings just wasn’t what my brain wanted to do today. Instead I used a scrap of canvas to test out some paint handling techniques. So this is less an “abstract” painting (In my opinion this definitely doesn’t fit the definition of abstract painting) and more just a test piece of canvas where I can try out various paint-application techniques with varying amounts of paint and medium, untethered from the need to try to make a painting that looks like something and just able to focus on the variety of paint handling and how, exactly, to get specific looking things. This data can be really helpful when I am actually trying to capture the essence of something in paint, as I can refer to this small bit of low-stakes play with paint to remember how I did a thing. For this ”abstract scrap”, I used three colors - turquoise, magenta, and a transparent brown. And white, of course, but white doesn’t count as a color - it’s just a way of lightening the color and adding opacity to these otherwise quite transparent colors.
