Deer Sketch

Deer Sketch

In my intro to painting class, my students are currently doing four quick sketches each focused on a different core element of painting - drawing, value, color and edges. I‘m trying to do the project along with them so I have an example for future classes. I did a floral piece a few weeks ago for color, and decided to try this one to purposefully practice edges. Doing these sorts of exercises can always teach you something, provided you’re open to further learning. I tried to keep most of my edges soft, except for the rim-lighting on the deer. Not perfect, but these are supposed to be painted sketches, not finished paintings. So in keeping with the project brief, I painted until it was at 70-ish percent, and I had learned a bit about edges. Now I need to think of exercises for value and drawing.
