Just a Little Wash
I’m not entirely sure you can even see it, but the presence of an ever-so-slightly darker wash that unifies the bottom two thirds and steps on the color, the pale patches of stone notwithstanding. They’re composed of a lot of white gouache, and that stuff reactivates with water very easily, and the white pigment makes things very chalky. With the darker wash, the rocks looks a bit too pale now, so the next step is to modify the rocks. the horizon line is now entirely to wavy to look like much like a horizon, and I fear that this simple, quick study that was supposed to be over quite quickly has ballooned into a project where each correction causes more problems and I kinda hate the whole thing. I’ll try to do the rational thing, not throw the painting in the trash, and rest on this one and see how I feel about it sometime in the near future. Absence makes the heart not hate your crappy work quite as much, and all that…
