Loading Dock, Sunrise

The sunrise was a thing of beauty this morning, seen from the loading dock at work. There was so much red in the sky that, were I a sailor, I would have been forced to take warning. So as I started this sketch, I thought it might be interesting to do the initial sketch in red pencil, and then layer on the dark backlit areas with black pencil after. It's certainly an interesting look. I like how this gives what I believe is referred to as "simultaneous contrast" - a contrast in value (light and dark) as well as a contrast in color (red vs. greyscale). It allows for some interesting organizing of information in a sketch, and I think I'm gonna have to try this again sometime.
