Master Copy

Master Copy

I’ve been looking through a book of one of my favorite artists - Richard Schmid. I really love his loose and diverse brushwork, and the way all the disparate brushwork combines to form beautifully and loosely rendered paintings. I noticed a few marks in this painting of a fallen log that I thought I would like to try reproducing - mostly in the bottom/foreground of the painting. I also had a few theories about the colors in the painting - it’s a relatively compressed color palette of greens and browns. So I figured today I’d do a master copy and try to hit the colors and experiment with some fun paint addition/removal techniques. I don’t know how Mr. Schmid would’ve done it, but I, personally, also feel like a second session once things are at least partially dry, so as to get some brushwork that is quite difficult to achieve painting we-into-wet and all-at-once.

Long story short - I had a lot of fun.

The original. Much better than mine. But I still learned a lot.
