Portrait of Mom

The parent’s power went out this evening, so they came over for a bit. I did a sketch of mom while she busy reading. She got up for a few minutes, and there was a second set of glasses on her head. So I added them in too. Turns out she was just holding onto dad’s glasses in a place where she knew she’d find them again, but the visual was pretty funny to me. She was sitting with her back to a window, so she had this cool backlit/haloed thing going on too. Pretty fun, but challenging, as I don’t draw mom very often because she is always getting up and moving around to help someone or talk to one of us. When she came back to sit down she was in a slightly different position, so I sorta had to assemble the appropriate information from the new pose. I like doing that sort of thing anyways. If I can only get a decent life drawing from a perfectly still model after an hour or two, I might as well work from a photo. So my personal goal is to try to get a likeness, and capture the essence of the model even when they are moving a bit, and the pose isn’t static. Seems more realistic to me, as well as providing a challenge.
