Sunset Fields 1

Sunset Fields 1

This is one of two paintings painted from refrence taken on a walk down the road at my grandfather's house at sunset. Something about the raking light hitting the trees and fields, combined with the fun stuff the clouds in the sky were doing really made for an excellent compositional structure. Really, I guess it's the bands of light/dark/light/dark/light running down the painting. Light sky, dark clouds, light horizon, dark tree-line, light field, dark shadowy ditch. And then I got to try to work colors from one are of the painting into other areas. Reds in the clouds and weeds. Honestly, it's nice when the value structure holds the painting together and then I get some nice color to play with as well...
